A visual impairment is any visual condition that impacts an individual’s ability to successfully complete the activities of everyday life. Visual impairment can occur during fetal development, happen gradually over a period of time, or suddenly due to medical illness or accident. To be declared legally blind, an individual must have visual acuity of 20/200 or less, or have a field of vision restricted to 20 degrees or less at the widest point.
A teacher of the visually impaired will determine the level of impact the impairments has on a student's ability to learn. To implement accommodations, students will be categorized into one of the following three categories according to their functional vision:
