Intellectual disability, previously known as “mental retardation,” is defined by having a significantly low IQ that hinders a person's ability to function independently (adaptive behavior). "Adaptive behaviors" include skills such as the ability to comprehend and participate in a conversation, to understand and follow social norms and to perform activities such as getting dressed and using the restroom.
