According to IDEA, a specific leaning disability is defined as, "a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, that may manifest itself in the imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical calculations". A learning disability is a lifelong issue that cannot be "fixed". However, given the correct support, students with learning disabilities can be successful. Parents and teachers alike can increase a student's success by learning effective strategies and encouraging students' strengths. According to the National Institute of Health, about 15%, or 1 in 7 Americans, have some sort of learning disability with issues in reading being the most prevalent (as many as 80% of students with a learning disability struggle with reading). Children who are learning English as a second language do not necessarily have a learning disability. More recently, it was found that 65% of the nations 4th grade students were not reading at a proficient level. Students with diagnosed learning disabilities have the intelligence to read/learn, but need deliberate, repetitive and explicit instruction to reach comprehension. |
