Section 504, as part of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, is a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of a disability. Section 504 requires that school districts provide a free appropriate public education (FAPE) to students who have a physical or mental impairment. Under Section 504, FAPE means providing aids and services designed to meet the student’s individual educational needs as adequately as the needs of non-disabled students are met.
IEPs, or Individualized Education Plan, is a written legal document that lays out the program of special education services that will be provided to a student to help them progress and thrive in school. An IEP is covered by special education law, or the Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA). IEPs are not given to students in private schools. |
